April 22nd, 2011

If you are 1 who enjoys working inside the kitchen, you are familiar with the temptations provided in the type of little kitchen appliances. Cooks could be somewhat childish when it comes to their ‘toys’. Like youngsters, they in no way met a kitchen toy they didn’t like. In short order, in the event you indulge yourself sufficiently in these time-saving devices, the question soon becomes, “Where on earth am I going to put all this?” At this point the devoted cook prevails upon a willing spouse, friend or cabinet maker to create a custom cupboard, with pull-out shelves in which to conveniently store their gallery of tiny kitchen appliances.

Like sewing enthusiasts, you’re into the mindset of ‘She with the most fabric wins!’ Just as the seamstress ends up with closet shelves overflowing with fabric scraps, cutting tools, buttons and so on, the cook can build a sizable inventory of small kitchen appliances. Sure, there are some basic small kitchen appliances we all own. There’s the can opener, coffeemaker, toaster, blender and electric frying pan. Oh yes, and most households have a microwave, for sure.

Even so, when you look over that list, those couple of crucial modest appliances are already hogging valuable counter space. Fairly soon, your prep region shrinks. You rearrange cupboards to gain a bit far more space. This opens up the counter space to your next temptation.

A pay a visit to to the kitchen store reveals an Italian pasta machine. You really like Italian food. It does not need much of a pep speak together with your self to convince you that this kitchen appliance will have you serving homemade raviolis and freshly made pasta to your family members on a weekly basis. You come home with the pasta machine, shove the toaster under the counter and set to work on making pasta. You get the picture.

As soon as you’ve mastered pasta in all its forms, you are ready to move on to a brand new skill.

Recently, you might have noticed all those bits of leftovers going to waste. The marvelous electric food bag sealer hits your consciousness. Aha! This kitchen appliance will quit the waste. You’re able to mark the bags and freeze them, to be used in other dishes later. Yes, it does take up that counter space, but it’s going to save you income.

A person read an post on the well being benefits supplied with a juicer. Unexplored territory. You watch an infomercial and are filled with visions of healthy kids downing cups of freshly juiced carrots. It comes with dozens of recipes. You purchase it.

By the time you get to the bread machine, coffee grinder, espresso machine and toaster convection oven, you’re in a pickle over storage space. “Let’s see, I’ll hang the electric wok from my new baker’s rack. Wow, that mixer has a big footprint. I’ll put up a shelf for the griddle, food processor and slow cooker.”

When you bring in an electric teapot, you’re screaming, ‘Uncle!’ begging for the cabinet maker. Such will probably be the allure of kitchen appliances.

Sous Vide Equipment - Start Cooking Sous Vide Meals At Home

April 6th, 2011

Sous Vide translates as “under vacuum” in French and is an original way to preparing food. As the name implies, the food is prepared within a vacuum which appears extremely intricate and complicated however is really relatively easy. The food is vacuum sealed in plastic and then cooked within a water bath that has a steady temperature. There are a variety of benefits in this method but 2 that instantaneously spring to mind are that it’s a healthier way to cook food and gives the meals a unique texture. So for anyone who is enthusiastic to give this new way to cook food a go what Sous Vide equipment do you need?

Essentially you would need two bits of equipment to do this cooking method at home.

The first is a vacuum sealer appliance. You’ve probably seen these machines before as they have other uses outside of sous vide cooking. People make use of a vacuum sealer appliance to seal food for storing in the freezer or merely to keep food fresh when traveling.

For sous vide cooking, the vacuum sealer will take away all of the air around a bit of food and seal the plastic cover across the food. This makes it all set for cooking. Vacuum sealers perform best with solid foodstuffs but do not perform as well with liquids in the vein of soups or sauces as the process of sucking out the air draws out the liquid also. So with liquids, the vacuum seal is probably not a vacuum.

In fact you can get machines that do vacuum seal liquids although they’re far more costly. These are chamber vacuum sealers that eliminate the air from a chamber. Placing a bag of liquid in the chamber allows for the pressure to be constant inside and outside of the bag. This makes it possible to vacuum seal liquid filled bags.

The second item of apparatus that you need is a water bath. As of late you can get a purpose made water bath for sous vide cooking. It is known as the supreme along with a demi version is also available. This is a home appliance that makes it effortless for home cooks to do this cooking technique. You simply set the water temperature and time and submerge your vacuum seal food items into the bath. It cooks slowly and creates a uniquely textured and flavored meal.

Other ways to produce a water bath without having a tailored product is to utilize an immersion circulator. This is an element that can be placed into a container of water to heat it up by convectional heating of the water. It achieves a constant warmth through the volume of water making sure the food gets cooked thoroughly.

Immersion circulators are costlier than a supreme water bath plus seem harder to use.

A Kitchen Mixer Makes Life A Lot Easier

January 28th, 2011

Hand crank beaters are a thing of the past. Kitchen mixers have come a long way from the toys we once thought they were. C’mon, didn’t you sit on grandma’s kitchen floor twirling away while she did some actual baking? Well now they’re big and bright and boy do they beat a mean meringue.

With all the kneading and beating and mixing that used to go on in the kitchen it’s no wonder the women of the house used to be required to have strong hands. Well, not anymore. But it seems a reasonable trade off. Not being able to crack a walnut with my fist doesn’t bother me a whole lot. Not being able to find time to bake like grandma, however, does.

If you can see it, you will use it. Many people have small hand mixers hidden away in some dusty cupboard. In this case bigger is better. If you’ve got a large Kitchen Aid style mixer you’re going to be keeping it on a counter somewhere unless you’re looking for hernia. This keeps it in your eyesight and within reach and, therefore, encourages more frequent usage.

A counter corner is a perfect spot to keep your mixer - far back enough to leave you space for every day kitchen routines, yet close enough to pull forward when you need it. Due to the weight and bulk of the machine keep it on an inexpensive cutting board for ease of movement. Then you can just slide it in and out of its corner without straining your arms and back. Better yet, if you’ve got the space, just keep it out and ready for use on a constant basis.

Traditionally mixers have been used for cake, and yes, cakes are still probably the majority of what gets made in them. But a kitchen mixer is a versatile machine. You can not only make other sweets and treats with one, but the mixer come in handy for a whole meal. You can keep your hands clean while mixing your meatloaf, add creaminess to your mashed potatoes, and use the dough hook to knead the dough for fresh baked rolls. After dinner the cleanup is easy.

Holiday cookies are no longer a headache when you realize that you can make several different batches with a mixer in the same amount of time it would take to make just one by hand. You can spend one afternoon making all your goodies for the season. Store in the freezer and you’re ready to go to that next holiday party with a tray of homemade goodness without all the hassle.

(A special tip to remember when using a large mixer for cookies though, is to make sure you don’t over mix the dough. Smooth cookies are what you will end up with if you don’t pay attention, and unless that’s what the recipe calls for, your cookies will spread and flatten when cooking and you’ll lose the chunkiness of homemade hand-mixed cookies.)

Kitchen mixers aren’t cheap and they can be heavy and bulky. But with a home on the counter to keep it handy and in sight you will be using it far more often and it will be well worth the expense. You’ll be making treats just like grandma used to make, only without all the fuss.

A Good Food Processor Is A Chef’s Best Friend

January 24th, 2011

Chopping, dicing, and blending food has never been easier than it is with food processors. There are even those that have the horsepower to mix up baking ingredients or knead bread dough. Processors come in several different sizes and most will hold about 2 to 14 cups of chopped food.

Food Processors save a lot of time in the kitchen because they will chop in much less time that you can do it manually. Most processors have different blades and can dice, slice, and chop. They have a clear bowl made of plastic that snaps into a platform. There is a plastic lid that snaps on to the bowl that has a chute where the food can be introduced to the processor. Inside the bowl is a rod where the blades are attached.

Professional use processors have a variety of different types of blades. There are the disc blades that look like a big circle that fits right under the lid of the bowl. This disc will grate, slice or shred. Place the food down the chute and the blade cuts and allows it to fall into the bowl underneath. They can have a whisk, dough blade, French fry cutter, julienne disc or a juicer. The other important blade is the one that has a shaft in the center that fits into the shaft in the bowl and has two blades that emerge from each side. This blade is situated at the bottom of the unit and chops, blends and purees.

It is a luxury to have a processor that will dice onions without getting the scent all over your hands. You only have to quickly take the skin off and maybe cut the onion once in half and the processor does everything else. To grate Parmesan or mozzarella you just place the shredding disc on and feed the cheese down the feeder.

Make baby food in a processor and be sure you know all the ingredients that are going into the mouth of your child. Put some onions, garlic, tomatoes and peppers in and puree. Place the combination in a pan and heat it up adding a few other herbs and some sugar and you have spaghetti sauce. Instead of going to the grocery store and getting sauce and many other things you can make them yourself and be sure of the ingredients that are going into them.

Most processors only have one speed but some of the better brands do have more. Processors are safe to use because the blade will not spin unless you have the lid securely snapped onto the bowl and then your fingers cannot get in the way. If it is not placed on correctly the blades do not move. There will be no finger cuts using a machine. After everything has been chopped up you must remove the blade to get to the food. But, you do not have to worry about being injured because the lid is now off and the motor will not run.

One of the best things about using a processor is that the clean up is quick and easy. You can place blades, bowl, and lid into the dishwasher and let them go. You will have to hand wipe the unit down as the motor cannot be immersed in water.

Food processors come in many prices and do not skimp or you will have a wimpy one that will not mix much of anything. The large capacity expensive machines do everything but it is rare that you will use all the features unless you run a restaurant. The mid price ones do just fine for home use. The mini ones can only be used to chop small qualities and not much of it. If you are cooking for a family of more than 3 it is advisable to get a processor with a little more substance that will do more for you and save more time in the kitchen.

Owning Your Own Meat Slicer Means Not Having To Buy Grocery Store Platters

January 22nd, 2011

Eating fresh makes consumers feel good and so they run to high-class fast food sandwich shops, unwittingly making large dents in their budgets. With the country suffering a recession, re-examining the way we approach eating is becoming necessary. Even couples that host dinner parties or game nights want to have a viable option in terms of what they can serve without running out and buying pre-made expensive platters. Meat slicers can change how we spend money on meats and cheeses which can be expensive when pre-sliced.

A meat slicer may not make sense at first glance, but when you understand that the prices range run from under $100 to over $400 and create professional results across all price points, the prospect of having deli-sliced meat in-house saving you hundreds of dollars a year becomes a draw. Buying a roast and slicing it yourself will give you that satisfying deli flavor to any homemade sandwich.

Many types of meat slicer models exist and it is important to keep in mind that more money equals more power. Automatically buying a more expensive model, however, may not be appropriate for your needs and so thinking about how often you will use your appliance is necessary. Don’t limit your slicer to only meats. They can take on anything from meats to fruits and vegetables.

Manual and automatic models are both available, but automatic has a leg-up on the manual competition and the price is comparable with better results saving both time and energy. The speed of slicing on automatic devices is usually only 1 speed and so they are more likely separated by their blade sizes that run from 7 to 14 inches. The smaller the blade the lighter the use, so think about what needs to be cut in your home before falling in love with a larger blade model.

If you’re an entertainer, buying a 10-inch bladed stainless steel slicer would be the way to go as it will cut through any and all foods. The appliance itself is built in a titled cantilever design that makes for easy cleaning and all slicers come with food carriages in different sizes. Extra large carriages let you slice a number of foods without have to empty the container underneath.

Having an appliance with a large blade may seem counter-productive with children in the home, but all meat slicers possess a safety lock that will put your mind as ease when thinking of the little ones in the kitchen alone.

Whether light or heavy use, budget friendly or expensive, there exists a meat slicer appropriate to any occasion. Examples of both low and high-end slicers are the Chef’s Choice 610 and the Chef’s Choice Meat Slicer Professional Model 667 with prices ranging from $100 to $470. Both slicers are durable, reliable and capable of slicing any meats. The 610 model’s 7-inch diameter blade lends itself to having to prep roast sizes beforehand due to the slicer’s smaller size. The 667, on the other hand, can handle any size roast as well as a variety of other foods.

Meat slicers offer the possibility of low-calorie cuts of meat with the necessary flavor retained, making bringing one into your home a smart and economical choice sure to be heavily used.

Gas Vs. Electric Stoves

January 20th, 2011

Do you have an electric stove but want to use a gas stove instead? Or it is the other way around? Which is preferable anyway - a gas or electric stove? How do they differ from one another? Read this short article and find out.

Gas and electric stoves are widely available and they’re an indispensable part of any kitchen. There was a time when electric stoves were “in” but technology has made gas stoves better. In fact, you’ll find that many of the newer ranges cook with gas. Why is this so? For one, cooking with gas is more precise. Because you get instant heat with gas stoves, you have greater control over the amount of heat underneath a pot. This makes gas stoves more energy efficient than electric stoves that take longer to heat and cool. Newer gas stoves that use an electric ignition also consume 40 percent less gas.

If you want to save money, buy an electric stove, as buying electric will help you save up to $200. But the amount you save will likewise depend on the model, manufacturer and features of the stove you select. If you’re concerned about power, an electric stove requires a 240-volt power supply - something that’s found in most homes. A gas stove, on the other hand, needs a gas line that usually costs more than having a 240-volt outlet. As a rule, the use of gas stoves is advised in places where the major power source is propane or natural gas. In these locations, all that’s needed is to hook up the stove to the gas line.

If you hate messy cooking, you should consider getting a gas stove since it has a sealed burner that protects against spills. While electric stoves with coil burners have removable drip pans to help you deal with this problem, these can become dull and dirty over time. A better alternative is solid-top electric ranges that cover the heat elements with a glass or ceramic top. These are easy to clean but cost more.

There are people who are scared of gas stoves for a good reason. They can be dangerous and are a gas hazard. It can be frightening thinking about a pilot light burning at home all the time with a gas line nearby. Others are afraid to light a burner even with an electronic ignition system. So be cautious with a gas stove, more so if you have flammable liquids at home. To stay safe, use a carbon monoxide detector to warn you if anything goes wrong.
